Transportation of goods by rail in the EU slightly increasing
Eurostat, the administrative unit of the European Commission responsible for statistics, published the interesting statement in early October this year, which speaks about the share of individual modes of transport in the total cargo transport on the mainland of the European Union. Short and interesting analysis for the period from 2007 to 2012. It is particularly interesting to see where it puts the railways, and how does in the sea of European statistics looks like transport of cargo in Croatia.
Overall developments in tonne kilometers (TKM)
To begin we will only briefly analyze how the total freight transport in the European Union, plus Croatia, namely the EU 28, moved in from 2007 to 2012. So, after the pre-crisis 2007, total cargo transport in the EU 28 fell by 12% in just two years. This is followed by a slight recovery to around 5%, and further drop of about 3% if we compare 2012 with 2011.
