Kinshasa uses robots as traffic wardens

Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of the largest cities in Africa, with a population of well over 10m. Nonetheless, when recruiting traffic wardens, it’s looked to the ranks of the distinctly non-human: five of them are robots, designed and built by local engineers to manage the city’s most gridlocked junctions.

“Ultra-modern” Utrecht control centre opened

Infrastructure manager ProRail officially opened a ‘robust, ultra-modern and striking’ control centre in Utrecht on June 4.

The 4 500 m2 structure was designed by de Jong Gortemaker Algra architects and built by Visser & Smit Bouw, with Arcadis as project manager and HOMIJ responsible for mechanical and electrical engineering.

European companies hopeful of reopening dialogue with Russian rail sector

Alstom and Siemens attended the 1520 strategic forum in Sochi last week to reaffirm their interest in restarting trade between Russia and the European rail supply chain.

Alstom vice-president Didier Bohin advised that despite the complex political situation, his company was planning a long-term presence in Russia. He announced that Alstom is setting up a Russian engineering centre to develop Russian-French train control systems for high-speed lines.

Mumbai Metro carries 100 million passengers in first 12 months

Mumbai Metro has celebrated its first anniversary, transporting 100 million passengers in its first year in operation.

Commissioned on June 8, 2014, Line 1, which is operated and maintained by Transdev and RATP Dev, is Mumbai’s first rapid mass transit line.
